Saying goodbye

“Better a week too early than an hour too late.”

A comforting thought after my vet and I came to a mutual conclusion about my beloved cat Wednesday.

Wednesday’s had a rough 2015.  An unexplained week of not eating kicked off January, then a scary encounter with Colonel Mustard in May. Over the last month she’s had episodes of apparent dizziness and balance issues that have left her reluctant to walk and apparently in pain. She’s spent the last several days hiding in my closet or under a bed side table.

At 13, Wednesday can no longer roam parts of the house she loved, get up on my bed by herself or see well enough to play with her string. Her blood work is fine. All signs point to a brain issue.

If only reaching the conclusion and knowing it’s the compassionate decision made it easier to say goodbye. It has helped me prioritize my activities so I spend more time cuddling with her. I’ve switched her to an all tuna diet- her favorite thing.

Saying goodbye is never easy, but picking a date and time allowed me to consciously and intentionally fill her final hours with love. I am amazed and humbled by the outpouring of love and support I received from my friends. It’s meant the world to me.

Run free sweet, sassy Wednesday. Enjoy playing with Cliffy again. I know how much you’ve missed him. Tell Thor I love him and can’t wait to see him again. Be nice to Beaner. Let her know that my naps are just not the same without her. I’ll see you all, my cherished pets, again at Rainbow Bridge.
